On this Valentine’s Day, I encourage you to practice some self-love utilizing the concept of de-cluttering! Hint: I’m not talking about the organization of your closet or kitchen cupboards.
As 2017 comes to an end, we become inundated with messages to reflect on the past year and to start making goals for 2018. While reflection and goal-setting are important for awareness and growth, it can also leave you feeling like time was wasted, defeated, as if you failed, or all of the above.
This last post in the 7 Weeks of Self-Care series has nothing to do with planning or goal-setting for the new year.
Nope. You will get enough of that everywhere else you turn…social media, magazine covers as you wait in the checkout line, commercials, family conversations. My one suggestion is to be a defensive consumer–consume nothing that has to do with how you need to change. I could rant on and on about this, but onto my next and only point.
Ever feel exhausted or “blah” after a full day of what you thought was rest as you spent the day binge watching Netflix getting up only to grab a snack or use the bathroom?
What about those days when you must be highly productive, but realize you are making simple mistakes and forming a full sentence seems impossible?
Or after mentally taxing days, do you consistently toss and turn for hours on end struggling to fall asleep?
While self-care requires effort, we also have to remember to give ourselves permission to participate in pleasure. This can look very different depending on interests, but there is one common factor, whatever you choose should be for YOU!
Choose to partake in something you don’t think you need.
I’ll give you a tip, sometimes this can simply be to choose doing nothing.

Ever find yourself going through the day not knowing how you got from point A to B…to Z?
Do you feel like you are going through the motions, but don’t feel like you are really present in your own life?
When was the last time you took a moment to admire something beautiful without taking a picture of it? How often do you check or use your phone? Perhaps more importantly, when are you NOT using your phone?
When was the last time you allowed yourself to be bored?
Many of us may have taken turns going around the dinner table with family or friends to share what we were thankful for last week, but expressing gratitude doesn’t have to stop there. And for those of us who perhaps spend holidays alone, I have been there. I know how feeling lonely takes over resulting in a negative downward spiral. I know how easy it is to go to the dark place.
